Little Ferdie (a fox) worries when the leaves of his favourite tree fall until it changes with a ‘new costume’ that amazes him.
Ferdie is so little that he presumably experiences autumn for the first time and inevitably worries about the change in nature. Even reassured by his mum that the tree is not ill, but it’s only autumn, he tries to do his part and helps the leaves ‘stay’. Upset by the stealers, not only the wind but also the squirrel and hedgehog, Ferdie comforts the last leaf at home.
The slightly longer story’s poetic style and excellent use of verbs, adjectives, and adverbs will captivate young readers. They will be drawn into Ferdie’s outdoor adventures, depicted in soft, pastel colours of brown, orange, and yellow. Tiphanie Beeke wonderfully captures the cosy feeling of autumn, making it a delightful read for children.
“Ferdie and the Falling Leaves” is an excellent introduction to the seasons – autumn and winter and the changes that occur. It offers the reader at nursery and early years of schooling a reflection on their personal life that changes happen and that they can be unexpected, unknown, but positive.
Cosy and autumnal that embrace change positively!
