A Cat Called Waverley

“A Cat Called Waverley” by Debi Gliori tells the story of an unusual ginger cat who experiences the impact of the war.

Even though Waverley was born in a park, she lives a spoiled life surrounded by many friends. The best one of whom is Donald, a warm-hearted man who gives Waverley food, a bed during the night, and a hug. Donald and Waverley led a contended life for years until her best friend packed to fight in a war in a distant land.

The duo’s new life brought much sadness to the story. Waverley, even though she stayed in Edinburgh, faced many unfavourable circumstances. The old friends left, and the cranes destroyed Donald’s place. Heartbroken, Waverley makes her way to the station, hoping to see her beloved friend one day. Can Donald make it safely back home? Or will he be one of the soldiers who lost their lives in a battle?

A Cat Called Waverley addresses the sensitive issue of war and its impact on emotions and practicality. It is even more distressing to understand that the author wrote the book about a real homeless war veteran, Darren Greenfield. The thoughtful author’s idea to write about the topic of the war, much less covered in picture books and well enhanced by Gliori’s muted colour illustrations of black and grey and vivid yellow and orange, engages the reader.

“A Cat Called Waverley” is an emotional story that can serve children between the ages of 7 and 9 and perhaps be used on the topic of Remembrance Day.
