Hole in the ZOO

What makes Number 2 such a special place to live? – “there’s a hole in the wall that belongs to the ZOO.”

Ellie and her brother appreciate the locality and enjoy visits from the animals throughout the week until Thursday lunchtime. The children have “nothing to do” when the pattern is distracted. Until Ellie took the matter into her own hands, leaving the place only to return triumphantly on the elephant’s trunk, bringing some remainder of The Jungle Book.

Young readers would benefit from practising the days of the week, some counting playfully as there are random numbers of animals in the story, such as 4, 10 and 22. The children will encounter the most familiar and rare animals: cockatoos and a wallaby. Bright colours, simple faces of the characters, and some of the animals (when introducing the elephant) will keep the children engaged; however, the font can sometimes be overpowering. Adults will find identification between the characters and their children experiencing boredom.
