Isabelle and the Crooks

A girl named Isabelle lives with her extended family, who are ‘ordinary crooks’. Will she have enough courage to stand up for her values?

The story develops during the week when her family tries to persuade Isabelle to participate in some burglary. Despising it, she even refuses to join her mother in robbing the toy shop. Whatever the crooks propose, she opposes it by being naughty or against the law. The day her family stole the Queen’s jewellery, Isabelle was upset, and she took the right action to bring all the precious things back to The Tower of London. But even the best intentions can sometimes turn wrong. How and who is going to help Isabelle to solve the complicated situation?

Isabelle and the Crooks is a beautifully illustrated story in which Chris Mould shows distinctive, memorable characters. The illustrator’s typical black outline technique for the figures and the buildings gives a sense of crookiness. The dress code and the interior décor show an olden style, unlike Isabelle, who dresses in modern outfits.

Isabelle and the Crooks show children that change happens if you stand for what you believe. A good message is that even if you disagree with your family, love can connect you. The story unfolds into the theme of not fitting in, living according to your values, showing kindness, and family love. An engaging read-aloud makes you think that different can mean better.
