Jonty Gentoo escapes the zoo in search of an adventure – the South Pole.
Jonty starts his journey in the ocean but, to his disappointment, finds a frozen land with no sign of penguins. Fear creeps in when, in the darkest, he faces “a huge bearded seal,” looking for his next meal. Luckily, a bear saves Jonty Gentoo but soon reveals that he made a mistake and is at the North Pole. The arctic tern doing its annual migration is amazed to see a penguin there but is happy to assist it to the South Pole. A long journey follows, and the exhausted Jonty joins the sailors. Arriving at the ‘dreamland,’ Jonty joins a galore of emperors, adelics and, of course, gentoos.
“Jonty Gentoo The Adventure of a Penguin” looks at various themes of exploration, mistakes, fear, kindness, friendship, and enjoying one’s community. A story narrated in a typical rhyming for Julia Donaldson style combined with the vivid illustration by Axel Scheffler outlining penguins’ journey in detail makes the reading enjoyable and visually engaging for EYFS and KS1 children. Adults will find the facts about birds in the last spread entertaining.
In this adventure tale, you can learn more than you expected.
