A little girl, Fern, is searching for “Joy” to bring it back to Nanna’s life.
Fern enjoys Nanna butterfly’s cakes and her Snowball cat, but she likes her smile best. Little Fern is fond of her grandmother and determined to bring happiness to her life when she finds out from her mother that Nanna has lost her smile. She equips herself with a fishing net, a box, a can, and a pointy stick and embarks on a journey for happiness.
Fern explores familiar places, such as the park and the pond, where she knows there will be much joy. She is right. There are plenty of giggles, tickles, and whooshing. However, with drooping shoulders, Fern returns home to admit: “Finding joy was easy, but catching it was hard!” Will Fern manage to bring contentment to Nanna’s life? Sometimes, the solution is close, even if you are not aware.
“Joy” is an emotional story that reveals the loving relationship between grandparents and grandchildren. It shows grownups and children’s impact on one another by experiencing various feelings and forming bonds. Enjoyable for young readers with its understandable vocabulary, familiar settings, and easy-to-follow illustrations, “Joy” would be an excellent addition to the shelf of children between the ages of 3 and 6 who wish to explore feelings and form a bond with significant adults. It would be a wonderful gift for Nanna and a granddaughter to enjoy!
