Mammoth

A mammoth in New York City tries to find his crowd.

The mammoth wakes up in modern days surrounded not by his herd but by a gleaming forest, strange birds in the sky and plenty of noise. With many questions in mind, he explores the city to find his herd. He tries to make friends by playing games, sitting in a café, copying others when reading magazines, and even visiting an art gallery. Unfortunately, all his efforts to be like others ended without success. Disappointed and confused, he became angry and created havoc. Standing at his lowest point, “above the din and the racket,” the mammoth heard a sound he surprisingly understood. He joins the little ‘cavemen’ band of musicians and fully expresses himself.

“Mammoth” is a fun story that gives young readers the vital message that finding your crowd is better than pretending to be someone else. It is a process that does not happen automatically but through exploring. Many children will identify with strong feelings when looking to be part of a group and agree that finding the right people can be an uncomfortable experience. Youngsters would find the glittering title and funny-looking mammoth on the front cover exciting, especially when presented further in the story with colourful illustrations featuring some of the landmarks of New York City.

Don’t be afraid to find your herd, even if it is challenging. This book is an excellent addition to any back-to-school collection!
