The Boldest White by Ibtihaj Muhammad and S.K. Ali – Picture Book review

The Boldest White is the third book in the series centred around Faizah and Asiya, written by the Olympic fencer medallist Ibtihaj Muhammad and S. K. Ali. The story struck a chord with its predominantly female cast and a sense of community.

Plot summary

Faizah loves being in a group because “it feels right.” On Fridays, she goes to the masjid (a mosque) with her mum and older sister, Asiya, before heading to fencing class. She enjoys fencing until she must demonstrate her skills in front of everyone. With her mother’s support, patience, practice, and her sister’s demonstrations, Faizah finds the courage to accept the coach’s tournament offer. She soon discovers that being in the spotlight is not scary when you lead by example.

Themes, Illustration and Writing Style in The Boldest White

Muhammad and Ali present young readers with themes such as feeling “right” and different, insecurity, sisterhood, family support, determination, emotional growth, identity in sport, and Muslim holidays. The text is well-paced, with italicised questions drawing attention to Faizah’s inner thoughts. Illustrator Aly uses colour palettes to highlight feelings: pink and purple for reflection, black and white for worry, and white for determination.

Extending these themes, The Boldest White offers a glimpse into friendship and the celebration of Eid, making the story particularly suitable for building a collection of books on diversity and multiculturalism. The author’s notes at the end are engaging for adult readers.

Final Thoughts

A thoughtful picture book that explores identity, courage and belonging.
