The Curiosity Club: Alice Alone

Year 5 is different for Alice Chang. She starts in a new private school – St Mildred’s and her world turns around.

Alice’s best friend Gigi moves there, too, but the relationships are distant. Gigi was introduced to more teenage ‘staff’ during her holidays in France, and she thinks Alice is weird. In return, she tries to act cool and looks like Gigi and her new friends Darcy and Chelsie.

With hurt feelings, lonely Alice decides to follow her grandmother’s advice and sign up for an after-school club. Unfortunately, the only available places are in the GAS – Girls Achieving in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.  With many challenges on the personal front, Alice found that the easiest way to be popular is to be yourself, and being curious and intelligent is something to be proud of.

“The Curiosity Club: Alice Alone” is a fast-paced story where the fans of school fiction literature will be thrilled as Sally Harris keeps the reader engaged with many unexpected turns. Children of foreign descent will find identification and be encouraged that conformity leads to misery, and discovering who you are might be painful but bring joy in the end. The illustrations help the reader visualise the feelings, the diversity and the curiosity. The Science enthusiast will benefit from the instruction of a few experiments at the end of the book with more app activities.
