Initially too preoccupied to savour life, a worm embarks on a transformative journey of self-discovery, ‘thanks’ to a bird.
The worm complains about his life situation, saying there is no space where he lives in the soil. Squashed by the creatures occupying the ground, he constantly moves to be alone. Busing himself, he cannot find enjoyment in the present moment; he cannot listen, rest or look around, and all is left for later.
The solution comes from a bird that carries the worm in the sky. The worm convinced that the earth is beautiful “and life can be full of endless possibility” even though the sky doesn’t offer much space either. Is the worm happier now?
“The Worm and the Bird” is designed for the EYFS and Lower KS1 children, offering the wonderful message of mindfulness. It encourages them to be grateful for the present moment and find contentment in what they have where they are. Even though Coralie Bickford-Smith presents a book with a limited text and minimal colour palette, she manages to make the story both thought-provoking and visually striking.
“The Worm and the Bird” teaches you to pay attention to the now and be thankful!
