The Truth Pixie Goes to School

With the beginning of the new year, new term at school, and new seating plans many children and adults hopefully will relate to the words Aada remembered:

“Don’t try and be something

You really are not.

Your one true self

Is the best thing you’ve got.”

In “The Truth Pixie Goes to School” Aada is having a tough year, but “this isn’t a sad story.”

She lives with her father, and after experiencing significant losses—such as death and unemployment—the family moved to a new town and school. The joy in Aada’s life comes from her friend, The Truth Pixie, and her little mouse. They love playing the piano, singing, and simply being together. However, when Aada starts at her new school, she quickly realises she feels different from her classmates, who often speak unkindly. Aada wishes she could be like them, leading her to hurt The Truth Pixie.

Feeling heartbroken, The Truth Pixie returns to the North to discover how much her brother has changed and how deeply she misses her friend Aada. Unsurprisingly, Aada feels the same way; she realises she is no longer different but still feels “weird.” Although she smiles throughout the day, she cries at night. What will happen when these two friends finally reunite?

“The Truth Pixie Goes to School” explores themes of loss, friendship, bullying, and the importance of staying true to oneself. As the second book in the “The Truth Pixie” series, it is written in rhyme, making it a delightful addition to phonics studies for early years foundation stage (EYFS) and suitable for independent reading for key stage 1 (KS1) readers. The story is presented in an accessible format and font, featuring brilliant ink illustrations by Chris Mould, a well-known collaborator with Matt Haig in the Christmas series.

This book is an excellent addition to any back-to-school collection.
