In Grandad’s World, Michael Foreman creates an almost idyllic relationship between a grandfather and a child, set in the countryside. The story combines a strong family bond with themes of pollution and community support when dealing with the issue.
Plot Summary
It is the beginning of the summer holidays, and Jack is heading to his grandfather’s village, where there is so much to see and do – watching birds, rabbits and foxes, fishing, building dens and making birdhouses. Most of all, however, he is fascinated by the pond that his grandfather cares for, just as his father once did. Jack imagines that one day he, too, will take on this responsibility. But their carefree summer is overshadowed when a truck deliberately dumps its rubbish into the pond.
Themes, Illustration and Writing Style
The author uses a simple story structure suitable for early years and Key Stage 1 readers. Part of the narrative is driven by the boy’s questions, curiosity and suggestions, while descriptive passages reveal details about the lives of the two protagonists. For example, readers learn that Jack lives in the city and has a balcony, while his grandfather once sailed across distant seas. Michael Foreman primarily uses a blue-green colour palette in the illustrations to reinforce the connection with the pond and themes of purity and pollution. However, the colour palette at times feels cold for the time set in the story – summer, normally associated with yellow, orange, red and green. Nevertheless, Michael Foreman uses colour to guide the story. It is noticed in the use of white from the torchlight as a symbol of hope, combined with scenery in vivid green at the end, to bring the spirit of happiness and community. The less-perfect lines and the muted colours bring a sense of calm to young readers. The contrast between London’s landscapes in the endpapers and the rural life depicted in the story emphasises nature’s role and Jack’s enjoyment of village life. Grandad’s World may appeal to fans of Sam Usher’s Seasons with Grandad series because of the warm relationship between the two main characters.
Final Thoughts
Grandad’s World is a story about the bond between generations, enriched by the theme of environmental pollution.
