Let It Snow by Anne Fine

Let It Snow brings two families – the Squirrels and the Hares caught in a snowstorm to find that friendship can blossom on the grounds of differences.

On Christmas Eve, the Squirrels and the Hares were doing their usuals – bringing vegetables to the market and shopping, but none of them expected to be stuck on a snowdrift on the way back. Seeking shelter first in the Squirrels’ truck and later in a nearby inn, they navigate small arguments from the little one and the need to rely on each other.  It turns out that the idea of bringing the presents just in case was perfect; the unsold vegetables were delicious, and the treats were lovely. The mix-up of presents – a particularly charming touch – becomes not only humorous but also meaningful, sparking new projects and explorations for the young characters.

The story explores a couple of themes: knowing more about others’ habits and lifestyles can lead to a better understanding, acceptance and friendships, and the idea of the old and the new, well-woven into the narrative, is harmonious. The clear takeaway, along with minimal drama, a few surprises, accessible language, and gentle pacing, makes Let It Snow appealing to young readers. Hyndman adds to the wintry atmosphere with her digitally crafted collages, distinct silhouettes, and well-layered characters reminiscent of wooden cutouts, set in contrasting landscapes of blues and greens and in warm, lit, orange and brown interiors.

A charming festive story that invites children to see how small gestures, shared food, and openness can build lasting friendships.
