Dork Diaries Sister Showdown! – Middle Grade Book Review about Friendship and a New School

In Sister Showdown!, the sixteenth instalment in the Dork Diaries series, Rachel Renee Russell creates realistic characters to build a fast-paced story about friendship, sisterhood and the anxieties of starting high school.

Plot summary

Nikki Maxwell is back from a summer holiday in Paris, but the days ahead are worrying. She “BARELY survived all the middle school DRAMA”, and now it is time to move to high school. Nikki decides to tackle the problem by being the perfect friend to Zoe, Chloe and the boy she likes, Brandon. The plan includes her being helpful and accepting every task for her friendship group. Unfortunately, her good intentions quickly turn into a fiasco.

Themes, Illustration and Writing Style

Rachel Ranee Russell continues the story’s diary format, written in everyday language with typical teen phrases like “OMG”. The teen spirit is conveyed by some text messages and emojis in the diary. The writer uses the font effectively to show the distinct voices of Nikki and her younger sister, Briana. Briana got hold of Nikki’s diary and wrote in it in childish handwriting, with texts accompanied by drawings typical of younger children. The font can encourage less confident readers to make a visual connection between the two characters’ voices. However, the reader might be slightly confused about why Briana writes in the diary for nearly 100 pages of the book and gets an explanation at the end. Another visual detail that can draw attention is the two black pages when Nikki felt unconscious. Even an interesting detail, readers familiar with  The 13-Storey Treehouse might recognise a similar visual effect when Andy finds himself in a comparable situation. Rachel Renee Russell works in collaboration with her daughters, Nikki and Erin Russell, who draw the illustrations. Even though the characters are well known to fans and readers who did not read the series, it feels that in this instalment, they look younger than students who are going to High school. However, these are minor details that don’t interrupt the flow of this fast-paced story that will resonate with readers who are moving to a new school or have not-so-smooth relationships with siblings.

Final Thought

Dork Diaries Sister Showdown!  can serve as an encouraging read for less confident readers, keeping the fans of the series happy.
